Course Description
This class is designed to give you a Red Cross certificate as a Water Safety Instructor. The Red Cross released new WSI content in March 2009. This class will use the new material. All older WSI materials are now obsolete.
This class is only required to cover the WSI content. However, there will be opportunity for students to get additional certificates if they are willing to put in the extra hours. These extra certificates include:
- Waterfront Lifeguard Training - 2006 revisions
- Waterfront Lifeguarding Instructor r.2006 (leads to First Aid, CPR and AED instructor). You must have current LGT and CPR, and AED cards to get the instructor certificate.
- Lifeguard Management - 2002
Student Learning Outcome for PE 243: Students will be prepared to teach swimming lessons to a diverse population of all ages and pass the certification requirements for the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certificate.
Course Objectives:
- Understand and identify the goals, history and philosophy of an American Red Cross (ARC) instructor.
- Plan, conduct and evaluate American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety skills for diverse populations such as geriatrics, pregnant women, and individuals with disabilities.
- Demonstrate the required ARC and WSI swimming skill standards.
- Identify the certification requirements for the WSI and recertification.
- Evaluate a swimming environment to ensure and maintain safety.

Letter Grades:
- Grade A = 1089 points or above
- Grade B = 968 to 1088 points
- Grade C = 847 to 967 points
- Grade D = 726 to 846 points
- Grade F = less than 726 points
Certification requires completion of all ARC requirements, including the written final exam and swimming skills and demonstration of ability to teach swimming.
