Water Safety Instructor PE 243 - Spring 2009

Course Description

This class is designed to give you a Red Cross certificate as a Water Safety Instructor. The Red Cross is releasing new WSI content as this class begins. This class will use the new materials as soon as they are available. Materials can be pre-ordered beginning Jan. 27, 2009 from Staywell.

This class is only required to cover the WSI content. However, there will be opportunity for students to get additional certificates if they are willing to put in the extra hours. These extra certificates include:

  • Lifeguard Training - 2006 revisions
  • Lifeguarding Instructor r.2006 (leads to First Aid, CPR and AED instructor). You must have current LGT and CPR, and AED cards to get the instructor certificate.
  • Waterfront Lifeguard Instructor - You must have current LGT and Waterfront LGT cards to do this.
  • Lifeguard Management - 2002
  • Hydro-Tone Water Fitness Specialist through Hydro-Tone Fitness Systems, Inc.

This course will utilize instructor handouts until such time as we can obtain the new Red Cross Water Safety Instructor materials. Materials can be pre-ordered via the web as early as Jan 27. Orders will ship in late February. Students can order directly from Shop Staywell. Cost is $51.95 plus tax and shipping.

Also Required at each class: textbooks, paper, pen/pencil, swimsuit, goggles, towel.

No watches and no jewelry are allowed during the LGT portion of the class or when teaching children.

5/22 LGI First Aid - with new Oxygen administration segment; LGI Written test on rescue skills & first aid
5/29 LGI CPR
6/5 LGI CPR concludes and includes AED
6/12 LGI CPR and AED Written Tests

  • Waterfront Lifeguard Instructor
  • Hydro-Tone Specialty Workshop for water aerobics
  • Make-ups as needed for water skills and written tests
