Course Description

This class is designed to give you a Red Cross certificate as a Water Safety Instructor. This semester, the class will spend some additional time on the water aerobics instructor content and students will have the opportunity to get a certificate as a Hydro-Tone Fitness System specialist using the Hydro-Tone water resistance equipment.

Student Learning Outcome for PE 243: Students will be prepared to teach swimming lessons to a diverse population of all ages and pass the certification requirements for the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certificate.

Course Objectives:

  1. Understand and identify the goals, history and philosophy of an American Red Cross (ARC) instructor.
  2. Plan, conduct and evaluate American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety skills for diverse populations such as geriatrics, pregnant women, and individuals with disabilities.
  3. Demonstrate the required ARC and WSI swimming skill standards.
  4. Identify the certification requirements for the WSI and recertification.
  5. Evaluate a swimming environment to ensure and maintain safety.

Water Safety Instructor's Candidate Kit, (EA) Rev. 2/09 - Stock # 651312 can be purchased online in print format.

Also Required at each class: textbooks, paper, pen/pencil, swimsuit, goggles, towel.

No watches and no jewelry are allowed during the water aerobics portion of the class or when teaching children.

3/22 Cultural Diversity, diving, Breaststroke drills, skill work and peer coaching.
3/29 Disabilities, starts and turns, inverted breaststroke, butterfly.   Teaching assignment #4.

4/19 REAL STUDENTS! Games and Water Activities, Longfellow's Whale Tales, Community Water Safety Program, Water Safety Aide Program. Introduction to Water Aerobics.
4/26 REAL STUDENTS! Safety Training for Swim Coaches, AQUACKtic Program, Mask, Fins, Snorkel, and surface dives. Water Aerobics continued.
5/3 Fitness Principles, Training principles, water aerobics.  Workout form, body measurement worksheet,  body composition worksheet,  list of deep water moves, common flexibility tests, and standards for Sit and Reach Test, Hydro-Tone Muscle Strength/Endurance Tests, Hydro-Tone test normatives, list of jugging drills,  list of shallow water movesShallow Water CircuitMuscle Balance notes.

Letter Grades:

  • Grade A = 1089 points or above
  • Grade B = 968 to 1088 points
  • Grade C = 847 to 967 points
  • Grade D = 726 to 846 points
  • Grade F = less than 726 points

Certification requires completion of all ARC requirements, including the written final exam and swimming skills and demonstration of ability to teach swimming.
