Important Information

  • Instructor will be given special numbers to issue to students just a few days before the term begins. The numbers are valid ONLY from first day of term through last day to add. Student will need to login to MyECC, enter the code on the "OnLine Add with Faculty Permission", and pay for the class.
  • The textbook comes with My Health Lab access code. However, it will not be used. A used textbook will suffice for this class.
  • The virtual classroom will not be available before the first class meeting.
  • Your login id will be set to first_initial_last_name as it appears on my roster. Last names with hyphens will not have hypens in the login id. (i.e. John Smith login would be jsmith)
  • Your login password will be set to E-xxx where the xxx represents the entire student ID number as it appears on my roster. The E must be a capital E.
  • Your initial email id will be set to your ECC email id unless you have contacted me and I have some other email for you. You can change your email id after you login by going to Set Profile and making the change.
  • If you need help with any of the technology, contact me as quickly as possible so you can get the help you need.
  • Be sure you drop yourself from the class if you do not plan to continue with it. Do not rely upon the instructor to drop you from a course in which you enroll.
  • I will add students until I reach my enrollment limit. In order to be added, please send me your request by email and include your full campus name, student ID number and be sure to include a phone number in case I have questions or email to you bounces. I will add from the wait list first.

Course Description

This class is designed to provide a critical analysis of factors which affect personal and community health.  Primary emphasis is placed upon self-empowerment and disease prevention in a culturally diverse community.  General topics include communicable and non-communicable disease; phyusical fitness, weight management, and nutrition; human reproduction and sexuality; stress management and mental health; drug use and abuse; and environmental health. Course satisfies Section A, Area 5 of the associate degrees' requirements.

Student Learning Outcome: Students will assess their risk factors for chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer, and identify ways to reduce their risk.

Welcome Form

When students complete the Welcome Form, it gives me a way to contact you when I have questions. This is often the night I'm getting ready to submit final grades and see students on the border. I will call up to discuss your grade with the hope of helping you get the higher grade. This form is also very helpful when students are wanting to add the class. I use the information when adding you so you don't have to go to campus to add. If you have a few minutes, please complete the form for me. I keep all information confidential. I do not share it with the campus unless it helps me get you added to the class.

Required Meetings:

There are no scheduled meetings for this class.  You do not need to come to campus to meet with the instructor as a class or privately unless you feel the need.  In which case you should make an appointment to see the instructor.

Technical and Personal Requirements

  • If you can connect to the Internet from work or home, have a personal email account, and can surf the World Wide Web, then you can participate in this class.
  • I will probably link to some videos on the web and ask that you view them. If you have problems watching the videos either due to software, hardware, or ISP issues, please let me know so I can arrange a work-around for you.
  • You do need to be self-motivated and self-disciplined to pace yourself through the work each week to keep up with the class.  No everyone can do that without regularly scheduled study/work times.
