My dear Mr Suttle,
No novel, but a play. In 1857 I managed a production of "The Frozen
Deep," a play by my good friend Mr Collins. I also played the part of
Richard Wardour in the production. Wardour sacrifices his life to rescue the
man loved by the woman he (Wardour) loves. Modesty forbids my saying too
much, but the Wardour part was an - ahem! - sensation. That was the
literary work which planted in my mind the notion of writing about
self-sacrifice.
Faithfully yours,
Charles Dickens
