My dear Miss Lalonde,

It is for you to explore the details of my book "A Tale of Two Cities,"
but I can tell you some of the things I was thinking of when I wrote it. I
was interested in revolution, what causes it, how it happens, what the
consquences are. An overriding concern for me was the possibility of a
revolution such as the French happening in England, and how that might be
averted. I was also interested in resurrection: personal resurrection, that
is - rebirth into a new life after years of suffering and bondage. And I was
interested in self-sacrifice - how a man might acquire dignity - nobility
even - by forgetting himself, and living, or dying if need be, for his friends.

Faithfully yours,

Charles Dickens
