Oh, alright. Maybe I'll understand her more when I get beyond page 238. Maybe
I must chalk up my confusion concerning Victorian sensibilities and
proprieties to mere pedantry. Living as I do in the age of the pubic display
of fine cigars (don't ask), the flutterings of femininity over trifles fail to
communicate.
As much as we like to denegrate the stuffiness of past societies, are we not
actually de-volving socially?
Is this a better understanding then: That the term "believe" was too deep,
too emotional for her to divulge, so she retreated to the more rational and
clinical "knowledge" of a fact? At least for me, this is where "at least"
makes sense.
