My dear Would-be Educators,

Some are good, some are bad. Perhaps I did a disservice to the profession
in my books, by dwelling more on bad ones than on good. You may remember Mr
Squeers, Mr Creakle, Doctor Blimber, Bradley Headstone and the like. I
suppose I featured them because nothing could be clearer to me than the harm
wrought on a child by bad teaching. But I can plead extenuating
circumstances. I did feature some good teachers: Dr Strong and Miss
Twinkleton, for instance.
Of one thing I am certain. There is no nobler profession, and the man or
woman called to it who earnestly performs his or her duty is a benefactor to
society.

Faithfully yours,

Charles Dickens
