My dear R. A. T.,

Dr Manette has been "buried alive" in the Bastille, and is "recalled to
life" from a life scarcely worthy of that5 name, from a life of endless
solitary hardship and drudgery, to one of usefulness and contentment among
those he loves.
Charles Darnay is "recalled to life" - twice - from the brink of death.
Sydney Carton is "recalled to life" from aimless debauchery and
listlessness to a condition of sharply defined moral vitality and meaning,
albeit a recall that is a prelude to physical death. It is my belief,
however, that death in such circumstances is no less than birth into eternal
life.

Faithfully yours,

Charles Dickens
