BLOOD IMAGERY...
I haven't read "Tale" in a long time (10th grade English) but I remember a
scene where a cask of wine rolls off a wagon and bursts in the street, running
in rivers through the cobbles. The poor and destitute come out to drink like
dogs and sop up the wine with pocket handkerchiefs. What better image of the
blood bath that was the benchmark of the French Revolution and the subsequent
intoxication of those who did the spilling?
