Your thoughts are ingenious but my thinking was simpler than you surmise.
I wanted Scrooge to endure what seemed to him a protracted ordeal, but to
emerge from it in time to practise the lessons it taught him. He would have
been unable to keep Christmas as it ought to be kept, had his ordal lasted
until 27th of December.
