My dear Miss Hickman,
"A Tale of Two Cities" is a novel about self-sacrifice. Sydney Carton
sacrifices his life to preserve the happiness of Lucie Manette. Miss Pross
sacrifices her hearing to preserve Lucie's life. An amusing writer of a
generation younger than my own has a bad novelist declare, "The good end
happily. The bad end unhappily. That is what fiction means." It was not
my intention simply to punish bad characters and reward good ones. I wanted
to explore the depths of the human soul, and to show that goodness is
sometimes bought at a cost.
Faithfully yours,
Charles Dickens

book. Why did Mrs. Pross lose her hearing when she shot Madame Defarge? Why
couldn't she have been okay?
