My dear Miss LaFleur,
Her Majesty graciously granted me an audience on 9 March 1870. I also
attended a levee later in the month. These were the only occasions when my
sovereign and I came face to face. She had however seen me act at an
earlier date, in private theatricals. Indeed, she and the Prince Consort
and the King of Belgium attended one of the performances of "The Frozen
Deep" that we put on in July 1857, to raise money for the family of poor
Douglas Jerrold. Afterwards her majesty requested an interview, but I was
still in my costume and make-up from the farce, "Two o'Clock in the
Morning," and respectfully asked to be excused, feeling this was an
inappropriate garb in which to appear before her.
I like to think that many contemporary writers were my friends. Among
them were Harrison Ainsworth, Bulwer Lytton, Thomas Carlyle, John Forster,
Thackeray, Wilkie Collins, and many, alas now little remembered, whose names
I suspect would mean nothing to you.
Faithfully yours,
Charles Dickens
