My dear Mr Matt,
The Inimitable is honoured by the supposition that he should have been the
recipient of awards! He was not, however, because the prize, the award, for
a book from which the author derives profit anyway, is a phenomenon of the
twentieth, not of the nineteenth century. Prizes there were in my day, but
they were for practical achievement, the invention of machines and other
devices, for which a need had been perceived.
I always considered, moreover, that the standing of a man of letters was
in itself sufficient reward, additional to the honest income to be derived
from writing.
Faithfully yours,
Charles Dickens
