My dear Miss Tanya,

In my time, anyone who was heir to a fortune was declared to have "great
expectations." So firmly was this use entrenched it was rarely used with a
more general significance. But it was still capable of such use. I chose
it for my title because it neatly signified Pip's position as heir to a
fortune, but also hinted at his broader expectations of life, doomed to be
dashed.

Faithfully yours,

Charles Dickens
