My dear Mr Eli,

In book three, chapter four, I allude to "Twenty-two friends of high
public mark." These are the Girondin deputies executed in october 1793. In
book three, chapter twelve, I speak of a "Jacobin journal." But I was not
writing a history. I was under no obligation to allude to all the most
significant events and personalities of the Revolution. I used only those
germane to my story.

Faithfully yours,

Charles Dickens
