My dear Miss Heidi,

I was one of eight children. My elder sister Fanny was born two years
before me, in 1810. She was an accomplished musician and singer, but died,
grievously young, in 1848. I was the second child. The third, alas -
Alfred - died the year he was born, 1814. Next came my second sister,
Letitia, born in 1816. She married a prominent engineer Henry Austin, and
lived into her seventies. My third sister followed in 1819, but little
Harriet died soon after her fifth birthday. Frederick was born in 1820 and
died in 1868. I fear he wasted his talents, but he was not vicious. A
second Alfred was born in 1822. He eventually became a railway engineer,
conscientious but never greatly successful. He too died young, in 1860.
The youngest of my brothers was Augustus, born in 1827. Of him I find it
difficult to speak. In 1858 he abandoned his blind wife, and emigrated to
America with another lady, who there called herself Mrs Dickens. He died in
1866.

Faithfully yours,

Charles Dickens
