My dear Miss LaFleur,

The second ending of "Great Expectations" was something my good friend
Bulwer Lytton persuaded me to write. He was convinced my public would be
disappointed by my original ending, in which Pip and Estella meet for a
final time and part for ever. I should never have permitted the publication
of the second ending, had I not been convinced it was superior.

Faithfully yours,

Charles Dickens
