My dear Doctor Bender,

I can recollect no such story. The 1855 Christmas number of "Household
Words," which I called "The Holly-tree Inn," did contain a story, by my own
hand, called "The Boots," consisting of an account by this functionary of an
attempted elopement by two small children to Gretna Green. It was not,
however, intended for junior readers. Perhaps an inaccurate memory of this
prompted the supposition about which you write.

Faithfully yours,

Charles Dickens
