My dear Miss Loffler,
You have the advantage of me. I cannot recollect where, in "Pickwick
Papers," I use the term "hob and nob." But I am in no doubt what it usually
signifies for me. I use it, specifically, to indicate drinking together,
with clinking of glasses, toasts, and other ceremonies. More generally, it
suggests pleasant intimacy together.
May I hope this answers your inquiry and atones for my forgetfulness?
Faithfully yours,
Charles Dickens
