My dear Sir,

  Yours is a strange question.  Does there have to be a victim?  If we say
there does, I think we have to identify several in "Great Expectations," all
of them victims of their own pasts, or of their moral errors.  Pip first, of
course.  But to him we must add Miss Havisham, Magwitch, Mrs Joe and
Estella.  They bring about their own undoing, or their past brings it about.
They are punished for it. And they are forgiven.
