My dear Miss Mitchell,
The sentiment in your quotation is one I have often entertained, and I am
flattered you should suppose the lines to have been written by me. But they
weren't. They were by Elizabeth Akers Allen, a lady twenty years younger
than myself, and are from the first stanza of her poem "Rock Me to Sleep."
May I take the liberty of correcting what your memory told you? The lines are:
Backward, turn backward, O Time, in your flight,
Make me a child again just for tonight!
Faithfully yours,
Charles Dickens
