My dear Brocklehurst School Friends,
The coming of railways to England was a great blessing, but not for
everyone. It made travelling so much easier. It made the carriage of good
so much easier and, because of that, brought greater prosperity. But in the
cities, many were turned out of their homes, not comfortable ones to begin
with, to make room for the tracks. As I enjoyed the luxury of swift and
painless travel, from one part of the kingdom to another, I tried always to
be mindful of those to whom what brought me convenience had brought only misery.
As I child, I was of a delicate constitution, and because of that was
unable to join in the games of cricket and the like my companions played.
As a young man, however, I took up riding for recreation. I enjoyed rowing
too. But in neither of these was I competitive. Later in my life, I was
always a great walker, and on one occasion, in America, was the challenger
in a walking match.
The poem you are thinking of is called "The Fine Old English Gentleman."
It might confuse you if I simply said, yes, I wrote it. It was in fact a
popular song of my day, of which I wrote a parody.
I am an expert on the past, not the future. This is your generation, and
you are better equipped than I am to foretell what is to come.
Faithfully yours,
Charles Dickens
