My dear Mr Lauscher,
I am sorry my books are not to your taste, but glad there are books you enjoy.
I do not think of writing books as one of my hobbies. On the contrary, it
is an arduous and exacting profession, through the exercise of which I have
been able to bring a degree of comfort and prosperity to those for whom I
have a responsibility. But hobbies I certainly do have. I enjoy walking and
observing. I enjoy dining with my friends. The theatre is my passion.
There are some sports I delight in, particularly pugilism. How sad it is
that you now impair this manly exercise with soft gloves. Needless to say,
I enjoy reading.
The secret of my longevity is this electric telegraph machine. That it is
which prolongs my life.
Several of my books owe something to memories of my own childhhood. The
one that does so most distinctly is "David Copperfield," and that is my
favourite among all my books.
Faithfully yours,
Charles Dickens
