My dear Charles and Prudence,
I am not sure what it is that puzzles you about the quotation from "David
Copperfield," "There can be no disparity in marriage like unsuitability of
mind and purpose." It is uttered by Mrs Strong, contemplating what might
have been - her marriage to Jack Maldon. She feels she has had a lucky
escape, because the two of them have nothing common. The sentiment sticks
in David's mind because it casts light on his own marriage to Dora.
Does that answer your question?
Faithfully yours,
Charles Dickens
