My dear Mr Jenkins,
"Rotten architecture, wonderful gargoyles," your century's Mr Orwell said
of my books. I cannot say I glory, exactly, in this description, but I
should like to suppose Miss Skiffins one of my more successful gargoyles.
Yet she is not there just to leer at readers from the rooftop. Miss
Skiffins should remind them that, in the most unlikely places, common
humanity is to be found, embodied in the most unlikely creatures. She is
of a wooden appearance, her gown is too orange, her gloves too green. There
is a suspicion Wemmick's interest in her may have something to do with
portable property. Yet she is a good sort of fellow, shows a high regard
for the Aged, and marries Wemmick in the end. Does Pip exhibit the same
virtues? Do all of those whom he admires exhibit them?
Faithfully yours,
Charles Dickens
