My dear Miss Perry,
Mr Jaggers derives what pleasure and self-esteem he does from life through
his sense of power. He enjoys knowing that he has in his possession secrets
of great moment. He enjoys others' awareness of this. He enjoys knowing
that the secrets he keeps, and the exercise of his forensic skills, give him
power over wild lawless creatures. He is entertaining rich idle young
men-about-town, the sort only too ready to despise an unglamorous,
hard-working, middle-aged lawyer. How better to impress them, how better to
secure their respect, their awe even, than to show what it is he can control?
Faithfully yours,
Charles Dickens
