My dear Miss Payton,

Someone asked me the same question long ago. I replied that, of all my
children, David Copperfield is the favourite. There is more of me in that
book than in any other. My best it may not be; my most loved it certainly is.
How can you calculate which writer inspired you the most? Shakespeare
inspired me with his understanding and his magical command of language. Sir
Walter Scott inspired me with his inventiveness, his varied scenes and
characters, his sheer productivity. The Arabian Nights inspired me with the
magic a story can weave. Smollett inspired me with his energy and plotting.
How can I choose? My readers must choose for me.

Faithfully yours,

Charles Dickens
