My dear Mr Brown,
The setting of the episodes of "Great Expectations" that take place in
Pip's native village, and in the nearby town, are based on the Hoo Peninsula
in Kent, and the city of Rochester. I had known the area since my
childhood. As a Pay Clerk, my father was attached to the dockyard at
Chatham for several years. Then, in 1856, I managed to acquire the home I
dreamed of living in as a child, Gad's Hill Place, in the village of Higham,
at the base of the Hoo Peninsula. Once again I became familar with the
marshes and villages of that part of Kent, with the ancient city of
Rochester. It seemed natural to feature them in my book.
Faithfully yours,
Charles Dickens
