My dear Miss Taylor,
Not as long as some suppose, I have to say. At the beginning of the
novel, Pip is still decidedly a child. Not long after that he is taken to
Miss Havisham's, where he meets Estella, about his own age. Miss Havisham
adopted Estella not long after her self-imposed seclusion. Shall we say it
has lasted ten or a dozen years when Pip is introduced to her? Pip sees her
as an old woman, but look at the illustrations I commissioned my young
friend Marcus Stone to engrave. I saw to it she was not represented as a crone.
Faithfully yours,
Charles Dickens.
