My dear Mr Woodhurst,
I am often quoted, accurately, as having said that my favourite child was
David Copperfield. That story approaches the facts of my own life more
nearly than any other, and mirrors my own struggles and suffering. It would
be wrong to suppose that I had no second thoughts on the episodes in my life
that I used to underpin "David Copperfield." I did. But somehow that book
recovers for me times that both pain and sustain me. It has a permanent
place in my affection.
Faithfully your,
Charles Dickens
