My dear namesake,
How prescient of your parents to name you after the Inimitable, with no
way of knowing he was to become your favourite author. A blush mantles the
Inimitable cheek as these words are uttered, but dare it be supposed he was
at least one of your parents' favourite author too? Ah, what a thing it is
to have a following.
If you know my works well you will know what an interest I take in the
education of the blind, and of those, too, whose sight is just very poor.
How I rejoice in what is opened up to you by ingenious devices! Steam and
gas are nothing beside them!
You ask after the "Life" my dear friend Forster so kindly wrote of me. I
understand it is a book not currently in print. But write to Mr Brian
Perkins at this address. He, the worthy fellow, is manager of the shop at
the Dickens House Museum in London. From time to time he has second-hand
copies for sale, not to mention rare ones. I do not doubt he will do his
best for you.
Faithfully yours,
Charles Dickens
