My dear Miss Ryan,

Thank you for your communication. Estella is a "man hater," because Miss
Havisham has trained her so to be, and rewarded her with trinkets,
privileges and prospects for so being. Estella, moreover, is quick to
sense and enjoy the power of her beauty, the power of the harm it can do
when used in the way she has been taught to use it. Miss Havisham has
trained Estella that way in order to wreak revenge on the male sex, one of
whom had injured her so grievously. Perhaps she fears Estella too might be
injured, but it is revenge that is at the forefront of her mind. It is evil
because it always is, to blame the group for the individual's transgressions.

Faithfully your,

Charles Dickens
