My dear Mr Neil,

  Thank you for your obliging communication, and for
your confidence in my judgment.
  You would not want me, I am sure, to substitute my
thinking for yours, in your essay.  Let me just suggest
to you, then, a few things in "A Tale of Two
Cities," which you might consider as symbols, according
to the learned definition you have conveyed me.
  I propose Dr Manette's bench and tools, Madame
Defarge's knitting, the stone faces of the Marquis'
chateau, the accident at the fountain, Monseigneur's
reception, the Carmagnole.  That is steam enough to
work your engine, I trust.
