Dear Mr Dickens,
This method of reaching you is much too swift for me. I simply did not have the
opportunity to see what my friend Mary Krimmel actually transmitted to you. (Is
transmitted the right word? But perhaps you are as bewildered as I am with
modern customs and language to explain them. I know that somehow she sent my
letter, but not by mail, not even by one of the jet planes which now go from
here to England in a few hours. It may have been by Western Union; but surely
that would be scandalously expensive, since I made no effort to be brief or, as
some say, telegraphic.)
Mary is too embarrassed to write to you herself, as she surely ought. She does
entreat me to offer her deep apology and to beg your forgiveness for the
disgraceful error of somehow changing *my* mention of Miss Rachel Field to hers
of Miss Cornelia Meigs. It definitely was my admirer (I can say this without
immodesty since I count myself among her many admirers) Rachel Field who
arranged for my memoirs to be published. How Mary made this ridiculous mistake
I can scarcely imagine. Lately, however, I have observed that she is even more
absent-minded than I could have supposed anyone to become. She may eventually
give me some explanation, although surely none could excuse her.
Meanwhile, although I consider *myself* all but blameless, allow me also to
apologize and to hope sincerely that my dear helper will not make such a grave
error again.
Your obedient servant,
Hitty
