Thanks so much for your reply.  My daughter, Sarah, is performing in a
production of A CHRISTMAS CAROL and the question about the expression "hard
as the dickens" came up.  We thought perhaps it was referring to the hard
life Charles Dickens had as a boy working in the blacking factory.  I'll pass
on your comment to the rest of the cast.
