My dear Mr Ross, One problem is that characters in books, like characters in life, change. An adjective appropriate at one time may be inappropriate at another. Bear this in mind then, if you please, when, for Sydney Carton, I suggest "dissolute, tenacious and self-sacrificing." Mr Stryver is easier. For him I suggest "bluff, self-confident, insensitive." For Dr Manette I recommend "righteous, afflicted, loving." Faithfully yours, Charles Dickens ____________________________________________________________________________ _________ -----Original Message----- From: Hclair8@aol.com <Hclair8@aol.com> To: cdickens@RMPLC.CO.UK <cdickens@RMPLC.CO.UK> Date: 26 January 1999 21:06 Subject: (no subject) >Dear Sir, > > I just finished your greatest book "A Tale of Two Cities", now i must explain >with adjectives each one of your characters, I am only having trouble with >Sydney Carton, Mr. Styver, and Doctor Manette.
