TITLE: Music Sixth Graders at Mandeville Middle Like
STUDENT RESEARCHERS: Lisa Sharp
SCHOOL: Mandeville Middle School
Mandeville, Louisiana
GRADE: 6
TEACHER: Ellen Marino, M. Ed.
I. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS:
I did a survey research project on what kind of music sixth
graders at Mandeville Middle liked. My hypothesis stated that the
majority of sixth graders at Mandeville Middle would like pop/rock
better than country, oldies, heavy metal, or rap music.
II. METHODOLOGY:
First, I wrote my statement of purpose, developed my hypothesis,
and reviewed my literature. Then I wrote a questionnaire on
different kinds of music. I drew a random sample of eighteen
sixth grade students and distributed my questionnaires. Then,
when I later got them back, I scored them. I later analyzed my
data, wrote a summary and conclusion, and applied my findings to
the real world.
III. ANALYSIS OF DATA:
>From the eighteen questionnaires I sent out, only fifteen were
returned. A majority of eight students stated that they liked
pop/rock music the best. Of the bands and singers listed, a
majority of students like to listen to Aerosmith and Mariah Carey.
All but two students listen to B97 FM. Most students sometimes
visit the music store when they go to the mall. Thirteen students
knew that Eddie Vedder wasn't the lead singer of Nirvana. Eight
students didn't know that Ace of Base sings "Young and Proud."
Students listed a variety of types of CD's and Cassettes they
would buy. Six said they would buy pop/rock, two said heavy
metal, two said rap, and one said country. Five students
disagreed and six agreed that pop/rock was the best kind of music.
Nine disagreed that country was the best and eight agreed that rap
was the best.
IV. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION:
I have learned that most students like a variety of music.
Therefore I reject my hypothesis which stated that the majority of
sixth graders at Mandeville Middle would like pop/rock better than
country, oldies, heavy metal, or rap.
V. APPLICATION:
>From the information on this report, I can tell DJ's what kind of
music to play at dances that involves sixth graders.
TITLE: Which City Water Would you Prefer?
STUDENT RESEARCHER: Jane Goldberg
SCHOOL: Pineview Middle School
Covington, Louisiana
GRADE: 6
TEACHER: M. Phillips
I. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS:
I would like to know which city water students in my class would
prefer; Slidell, Covington, or Lee Road Water Company. My
hypothesis states that three out of six will prefer Slidell's
water.
II. METHODOLOGY:
First, I collected the water from Slidell, Covington, and the Lee
Road Water Company. Then I will question six students in my sixth
grade K.E.E.P. class. Next, I accepted or rejected my hypothesis.
Finally, I wrote my summary and conclusion.
III. ANALYSIS OF DATA:
>From the survey I took, everybody said that Covington's water had
the best taste. Everybody also said that Slidell's tasted the
worst. Four out of six said they thought that in the future water
will be Earth's scarcest resource. Three out of six said that we
should buy bottled water and tell the mayor or governor to help in
making our water safe to drink.
IV. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION:
I reject my hypothesis which states that three out of six would
think that Slidell's water is the best. Everyone said that they
liked Covington's water the best.
V. APPLICATION:
Most of the people I surveyed felt that there are several ways
that we can make the water better. This can apply to me because I
would want to know which water would be good for me and which
water has the worst taste.
TITLE: Leisure Time
STUDENT RESEARCHER: Niels Paulson-Thorp
SCHOOL: Mandeville Middle School
Mandeville, Louisiana
GRADE: 6
TEACHER: Ellen Marino, M.Ed.
I. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS:
I will do research on how sixth grade Mandeville Middle School
students spend their leisure time. I am interested in this topic
because I like to draw, read, and play video games, but I don't
like to play sports. My hypothesis states that sixth grade
Mandeville Middle School students will spend more time playing
sports than other leisure time activities and will have more than
one video game system.
II. METHODOLOGY:
I stated my purpose, reviewed the literature, and developed my
hypothesis. I developed my questionnaire. I then drew a random
sample. I administered the questionnaires and scored them when
they were returned. I then wrote my analysis of data, summary and
conclusion, and applied my findings to the real world.
III. ANALYSIS OF DATA:
Of the 18 questionnaires I sent out, only 15 were returned. A
majority of 8 students spent the most of their leisure time
playing sports. All 15 students said they had a video game
system, and 11 had more than one. Ten students participated in a
variety of sports. If they had an hour of free time, 10 students
would spend their time doing something inside. Seven students
ranked sports most important. Eleven students agreed that sports
are the best way to spend your leisure time. Ten students
disagreed or stayed neutral to the statement: "Movies are the best
way to spend your leisure time." Seven students agreed that
reading is the best way to spend your leisure time. Nine students
disagreed or stayed neutral to the statement: "Video games are the
best way to spend your leisure time."
IV. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION:
Eight of the 15 students spent the most of their leisure time
playing sports and 11 of the 15 students had more than one video
game system. Therefore, I accept my hypothesis, which stated that
sixth grade Mandeville Middle School will spend more time playing
sports than other leisure time activities and will have more than
one video game system.
V. APPLICATION:
I can apply my findings to the real world by being able to tell
the P.E. teacher that 8 of every 15 students prefer sports to
other leisure time activities.
TITLE: Music to Your Ears
STUDENT RESEARCHER: Joelle Szczepanski
SCHOOL: Mandeville Middle School
Mandeville, Louisiana
GRADE: 6
TEACHER: Ellen Marino, M.Ed.
I. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS:
I wanted to do a research project on music because I wanted to
know what kind of music sixth grade students liked best. My
hypothesis stated that sixth graders at Mandeville Middle School
will like pop rock better than rock, rap, country, heavy metal, or
any other type of music.
II. METHODOLOGY:
First, I wrote my statement of purpose and reviewed the
literature. Next, I developed my hypothesis, developed a
questionnaire, and drew a random sample. I then administered and
scored the questionnaires. Finally, I wrote my summary and
conclusion and applied my findings to the real world.
III. ANALYSIS OF DATA:
Out of the eighteen surveys I sent out, only sixteen were
returned. The majority of students said that they have a radio,
tape player, CD player, and record player at their house. Five
students think sixth graders listen to rock the most, four think
pop rock, and two think heavy metal. Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm is a
favorite song to six students, four like Don't Rock the Jukebox,
three like The Sign, two like Jeremy, and one likes Whatta Man.
Three students like pop rock music, five like country, three like
heavy metal, and two like rock. A majority of eleven students
agree that a lot of lyrics from rap songs contain talk of violence
and twelve agree that most sixth graders listen to B97. Ten
students disagree with the statement that songs from animated
movies are only for little kids. When students were asked what
type of CD/Cassette they would buy, seven chose pop rock, five
chose country, two chose heavy metal, and two weren't sure.
IV. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION:
According to the survey results, there is no one type of favorite
music that sixth graders like. Therefore I reject my hypothesis
which states that sixth graders at Mandeville Middle School will
like pop rock better than rock, rap, country, heavy metal, or any
other type of music.
V. APPLICATION:
Next time I go to a dance or party for sixth graders, I can share
this information with someone who is in charge of the music.
TITLE: Student Survey About Movies
STUDENT RESEARCHER: T.J. Housey
SCHOOL: Mandeville Middle School
Mandeville, Louisiana
GRADE: 6
TEACHER: Ellen Marino, M.Ed.
I. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS:
I would like to do a survey research project on how 6th grade
students at M.M.S. feel about movies. My hypothesis states that
the majority of 6th grade students at M.M.S. would rather see
action movies than other types.
II. METHODOLOGY:
First, I wrote a statement of purpose and reviewed the literature.
Then I stated my hypothesis. I made a questionnaire and drew a
random sample. I administered and scored my questionnaire. Then
I analyzed the data. Finally, I wrote a summary and conclusion
and applied it to the real word.
III. ANALYSIS OF DATA:
All 18 questionnaires were returned. Five students go to the
movies 4 or more times a month. One student prefers to see
comedy, 6 prefer to see horror movies, 8 prefer to see action
movies and 3 prefer other types of movies. Eight students agree
that action movies are the best. Eight students agree that comedy
movies are the best, and 12 agree that horror are the best. All
18 students rent movies. When asked what your favorite kind of
movie was, action movies came up the most.
IV. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION:
More students would rather see action movies than other types. I
accept my hypothesis which stated that the majority of 6th grade
students at M.M.S. would rather see action movies than other
types.
V. APPLICATION:
Knowing this information, I can tell movie theatres and movie
rental places that 6th grade students would rather see action
movies than other types.
TITLE: What Are People's Opinions on Animal Rights?
STUDENT RESEARCHER: Jessica Suchanek
SCHOOL: Pine View Middle School
Covington, Louisiana
GRADE: 6
TEACHER: Ms. M. Phillips
I. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS:
I am doing this project to find out people's opinions about
animals rights. My hypothesis states that 8 out of 10 people
that I survey will care about animal rights.
II. METHODOLOGY:
In my experiment, I will develop a questionnaire consisting of
five questions. I will ask 20 randomly selected people to answer
my questionnaire. I will then record the results and write my
summary and conclusion.
III. ANALYSIS OF DATA:
Many people in my survey said that animals have rights. Sixty
percent of the people thought that animal testing shouldn't go on,
but 20% said that testing should go on. Another 20% were
undecided. Ninety percent of the people surveyed thought that
animal abuse and the senseless killing of animals were important
areas of concern.
IV. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION:
In conclusion, I found that many people care about animal rights.
I accept my hypothesis which stated that 8 out of 10 people that I
survey will care about animal rights. This survey indicates that
the government needs to acknowledge the concerns of people about
animal rights.
V. APPLICATION:
I could use this information to resolve some of the controversy
about animal rights.
TITLE: Sports
STUDENT RESEARCHER: Reid Uzee
SCHOOL: Mandeville Middle School
Mandeville, Louisiana
GRADE: 6
TEACHER: Ellen Marino, M, Ed.
I. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS:
I wanted to do a scientific research project on how much 6th
graders at MMS know about sports. My hypothesis states that the
6th grade students at MMS will answer at least 50% of the sports
questions on my questionnaire correctly.
II. METHODOLOGY:
First, I wrote my statement of purpose, developed my hypothesis,
and reviewed my literature. Then I developed a questionnaire and
drew a random sample. I then scored my questionnaire and wrote my
analysis of data. I wrote my summary and conclusion and applied
my findings to the real world.
III. ANALYSIS OF DATA:
I received all 18 questionnaires back. Everyone knew that there
are four quarters in a football game. Only 12 students knew you
get two points for a safety. Twelve students knew that there are
three periods in a hockey game. Fourteen students knew that a
walk doesn't count against your batting average and 11 students
knew there are 3 outfielders in major league baseball. Twelve
students agreed that baseball is the most exciting sport to watch.
Thirteen students agreed that football is the most exciting sport
to watch. When asked what was their favorite sport to watch, 1
student chose tennis and golf, 2 chose soccer, 4 chose basketball,
6 chose baseball, and 5 chose baseball.
IV. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION:
Since the 6th grade students correctly answered more than half of
the questions about sports correctly, I accept my hypothesis which
stated that the 6th grade students at MMS will answer at least 50%
of sports questions correctly.
V. APPLICATION:
I will apply this information to the real world by telling the
P.E. teachers that 6th grade students know baseball and football
but lack knowledge about hockey.
TITLE: The Prevalence of Color Blindness
STUDENT RESEARCHER: Erin Dunn
SCHOOL: Pineview Middle School
Covington, Louisiana
GRADE: 6
TEACHER: Maria Phillips
I. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS:
I wanted to find out how many students in Mrs. Frost's class at
Pine View are color blind. My hypothesis stated that one student
out of twenty-five (25) students in the class will be color blind.
II. METHODOLOGY:
First, I survey 19 students in Mrs. Frost's class with a
questionnaire and a color blindness test. Then I recorded my data
and analyzed it. Last, I wrote my summary and conclusion.
III. ANALYSIS OF DATA:
A majority of 100% of the students that I surveyed are not color
blind.
IV. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION:
I rejected m hypothesis which stated that one student out of
twenty-five (25) students in the class will be color blind.
V. APPLICATION:
I will bring this research project to the school board. I hope
that my findings will let them know how important it is that all
students be tested for color blindness.
TITLE: Student's Leisure Time Activities
STUDENT RESEARCHERS: Tim Grove
SCHOOL: Mandeville Middle School
Mandeville, Louisiana
GRADE: 6
TEACHER: Ellen Marino, M.Ed.
I. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS:
I wanted to find out what sixth grade students at Mandeville
Middle School do in their leisure time. My hypothesis states that
at least 75% of the sixth grade students surveyed will play sports
and video games in their free time.
II. METHODOLOGY:
First, I stated my purpose, reviewed the literature, and developed
my hypothesis. Next, I formulated a questionnaire. Then I drew a
random sample. Next, I administerd the questionnaires. Then,
after I recieved them back, I scored them. Then I analyzed my
data, rejected or accepted my hypothesis, and applied my findings
to the real world.
III. ANALYSIS OF DATA:
Out of the 18 questionnaires I sent out, I recieved 17 back. When
asked what students did in their free time 9 chose playing sports,
4 chose playing video games, 3 chose biking, and 1 chose reading.
A majority of 10 knew that leisure time is freedom away from time
consuming activities. Students said that after school they liked
to do a variety of activities: 6 said go out and play, 4 said
outside activities, 3 said sports, ride bikes, and watch T.V., 2
said swim, and 1 said eat. Fourteen students said that if they
had 1 hour of free time they would choose to play video games and
sports. A majority of 13 students play 1 hour or less of video
games daily. A majority of 11 students practice or play sports 2-
3 hours a day. When asked how much leisure time a day they have
each day; 7 said 4-5 hours a day, 8 said 2-3 hours a day, and 2
said 6 hours a day.
IV. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION:
75% of the students surveyed said they play sports and video games
in their leisure time. Therefore I accept my hypothesis which
stated that at least 75% of the sixth grade students surveyed
would play sports and video games in their free time.
V. APPLICATION:
Now that I know that sixth graders play sports and video games in
their free time I can share this information with parents so they
can know what to give their child as a gift.
TITLE: Coke or Pepsi?
STUDENT RESEARCHERS: James Pye
SCHOOL: Pineview Middle
Covington, Louisiana
GRADE: 6
TEACHER: M. Phillips
I. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS:
I want to find out if Coke is more popular than Pepsi. My
hypothesis states that six people out of every ten will like Coke
and four people out of ten will like Pepsi.
II. METHODOLOGY:
First, I will make a data collecting sheet. Next, I will survey
20 students. Then, I will give each student a sheet with my
questions on it. When they are finished I will collect the sheets
and record my results.
III. ANALYSIS OF DATA:
All the students I surveyed drink soft drinks, have tried Coke,
and have tried Pepsi. A majority of the students drink more than
twelve ounces of soft drinks in one day. Of those surveyed, 2 out
of every 3 preferred cola drinks over non-cola drinks and 2 out of
every 3 preferred Coke over Pepsi. However, among those who
preferred non-cola over cola drinks, the preference was evenly
divided.
IV. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION:
I reject my hypothesis which states that 6 out of every 10 will
like Coke. Most of the students preferred Coke over Pepsi and
cola drinks over non-cola drinks.
V. APPLICATION:
I will send a copy of my research to the Coke and Pepsi companies
so they can see if they can improve their ratings.
