TITLE: Student Knowledge and Attitudes About Smoking
STUDENT RESEARCHER: Leslie Martino and Jessica Warden
SCHOOL: Mandeville Middle School
Mandeville, Louisiana
GRADE: 6
TEACHER: John I. Swang, Ph.D.
I. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS:
We want to find out if the sixth grade students at MMS are aware
of the effects of cigarette smoking. Our hypothesis states that
the sixth grade students at MMS will be aware of the effects of
cigarette smoking.
II. METHODOLOGY:
First, we wrote a statement of purpose, review of literature, and
hypothesis. Then we wrote a questionnaire. Next, we gave them to
the sixth grade students that were drawn from a random sample.
Then we scored our questionnaires. We then analyzed our data,
accepted or rejected our hypothesis, and wrote a summary and
conclusion. Last, we applied our research to the real world.
III. ANALYSIS OF DATA:
Of the eighteen questionnaires we sent out, sixteen of them were
returned. A majority of eight students said that no one in their
family smoked, but seven students said they had family members who
smoked. A majority of thirteen students said they knew people
outside of their family that smoked. A majority of eleven
students knew one to five people who smoked. A majority of eleven
students said they will not sit next to people who smoke at a
resturaunt. A majority of nine students did not know that smoking
causes all of the following diseases: emphysema, lung cancer,
leukemia, throat cancer, oral cancer, cataracts, and heart
disease. A majority of fourteen students knew that in 1964 the
surgeon general put out a warning printed on cigarettes packages
and their ads. All of the students thought that smoking is not
cool. All of the students knew nicotine is the addictive drug in
a cigarette. A majority of eleven students knew that nicotine is
an alkaloid and a carcinogen. A majority of fourteen students
knew smoking was a form of drug abuse. A majority of thirteen
students knew the smoke from cigarettes causes cancer in non-
smokers. All of the students said they will not smoke when they
grow up.
IV. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION:
We found out that the sixth grade students at MMS are aware of
many of the issues related to cigarette smoking. They also do not
like cigarette smoking and do not plan on smoking in the future.
A majority of students knew that second hand smoke causes cancer,
but did not know that cigarette smoke causes other diseases as
well. Therefore, we reject our hypothesis which states that the
sixth grade students at MMS will be aware of the effects of
cigarette smoking.
V. APPLICATION:
We can apply our research report to the real world by telling drug
abuse programs that students know that cigarette smoking causes
cancer, but students do not know it causes many other diseases as
well.
TITLE: Student Attitudes About Drugs
STUDENT RESEARCHER: Kelli Anderson and Wyatt Adams
SCHOOL: Mandeville Middle School
Mandeville, Louisiana
GRADE: 6
TEACHER: John I. Swang, Ph.D.
I. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS:
We want to find out what the sixth grade students at Mandeville
Middle School think about drug use. Our hypothesis states that
the sixth grade students at Mandeville Middle School will have
negative attitudes about drug use.
II. METHODOLOGY:
First, we wrote our statement of purpose, review of literature,
and hypothesis. Next, we created a questionnaire that we randomly
administered to eighteen sixth grade students. When the
questionnaires were returned we scored them, conducted our
analysis of data, and wrote our summary and conclusion. We
finally, applied our research to the real world.
III. ANALYSIS OF DATA:
Out of the eighteen questionnaires we administered, sixteen of
them were returned. A majority of nine students consider smoking
a type of drug abuse. A majority of thirteen students said that
they would never try a drug. A majority of ten students have been
offered a cigarette before. Six students said that they have not
been offered a cigarette before. A majority of eleven students
knew one to five different kinds of drugs. The three most
mentioned drugs were marijuana, cocaine, and cigarettes. A
majority of nine students said that they didn't feel comfortable
around someone who has had too much alcohol. A majority of nine
students said that they don't have a friend that uses drugs.
Seven students didn't know if their friend use drugs. A majority
of ten students thought that all illegal drugs should stay
illegal. A majority of sixteen students thought that people use
drugs because of peer pressure, to get high, and to be cool. A
majority of fifteen students said that they are not influenced by
celebrities that use drugs.
IV. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION:
We found out that the majority of the students had negative
attitudes toward drug use. Therefore, we accepted our hypothesis
which stated that the sixth grade students at Mandeville Middle
School would have a negative attitude about drug use.
V. APPLICATION:
We can apply our research to the real world by asking teachers to
teach the students more about drugs. We think that they should
also teach what drugs can do to your body and how to identify
them.
TITLE: How Students Feel About Hillary Clinton
STUDENT RESEARCHER: Lauren Eppling
SCHOOL: Mandeville Middle School
Mandeville, Louisiana
GRADE: 6
TEACHER: John I. Swang, Ph.D.
I. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS:
I would like to know what students feel about First Lady Hillary
Clinton. My first hypothesis states that the students I survey
will think that Hillary Clinton is intelligent. My second
hypothesis states that the majority of the students will think she
has too much power in the White House.
II. METHODOLOGY:
First, I wrote my statement of purpose. I reviewed my literature
and developed my hypothesis. Next, I developed a questionnaire
and administered it to 18 randomly chosen sixth grade students.
After they were returned, I wrote my analysis of data and summary
and conclusions. Finally, I applied my results to the real world.
III. ANALYSIS OF DATA:
After scoring the 13 questionnaires that were returned, I found
that fifty percent of the students thought that Mrs. Clinton
should aid her husband in solving social issues. The majority
think she shouldn't be in the President's Cabinet. Eighty-seven
percent of the girls and fifty percent of the boys think Hillary
Clinton has too much power in the White House. Eighty-three
percent of the boys and sixty-three percent of the girls think the
saying "President Hillary Clinton" is making fun of the
presidential family. None of the boys looked up to the
president's wife as a role model, and only thirteen percent of the
girls did. The majority of students said they wouldn't want
Hillary Clinton as a mother. Sixty-three percent of the girls and
sixty-seven percent of the boys think she is intelligent. Fifty
percent of the boys and sixty-three percent of the girls think
Mrs. Clinton won't do a good job with the health care reform
effort. The majority of the boys and girls think Hillary
Clinton's ideas won't be opposed because she is the President's
wife.
IV. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION:
In my research, I found that the majority of both boys and girls
think Hillary Clinton is intelligent. I also found that the
majority of girls and fifty percent of the boys think she has too
much power in the White House. Therefore I accept both my
hypotheses which state that the majority of the students I survey
will think Hillary Clinton is intelligent and the majority of the
students will think she has too much power in the White House.
V. APPLICATION:
I can use this information by sending it to the President so he
can see the opinions of MMS students about his wife's role in his
administration.
TITLE: What Do Students Think Of Today's Public Schools?
STUDENT RESEARCHER: Keith Hennegan
SCHOOL: Mandeville Middle School
Mandeville, Louisiana
GRADE: 6
TEACHER: John I. Swang, Ph.D.
I. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS:
I want to know what students think about St. Tammany Parish public
schools and certain school issues. My hypothesis states that
students will have negative responses to most of my questions.
II. METHODOLOGY:
First, I stated my purpose, reviewed my literature, and developed
my hypothesis. I then wrote up a questionnaire and distributed it
to eighteen randomly chosen sixth grade students. After receiving
my questionnaires, I scored them and tallied up the results.
Next, I analyzed my data, accepted or rejected my hypothesis, and
applied what I learned to the real world.
III. ANALYSIS OF DATA:
Of the eighteen questionnaires distributed, I received sixteen
back. I found that 63% of the students thought that public
schools are over-crowded. Eighty-one percent disagreed with year-
round schooling, and 75% disagreed with the use of portables as
classrooms. The majority of the students thought that their class
and their classroom's size is fine as it is. Most of the students
felt that we need more computers in our classrooms today and that
teachers are not getting paid enough. They also agreed that
teachers do not have enough supplies for their classrooms, that
the school board wasn't doing a good job, and that our political
leaders were not improving public education. The students felt
that their teachers were using a fair amount of discipline, their
bus route was not too long, but that their bus was overcrowded.
Finally, the average ranking among today's public schools on a
scale from one to ten was five.
IV. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION:
Overall, the students had negative responses to most of my
questions. Therefore, I accept my hypothesis which states that
the students would have negative responses to most of my questions
about public schools.
V. APPLICATION:
I will tell the parish school board and my parents to try to
improve public schools.
TITLE: Student Knowledge of Drug Abuse
STUDENT RESEARCHERS: Kyle Digby and Joey Brand
SCHOOL: Mandeville Middle School
Mandeville, Louisiana
GRADE: 6
TEACHER: John I. Swang, Ph.D.
I. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS:
We wanted to find out if the sixth graders at M.M.S were aware of
drug abuse. Our hypothesis stated that a majority of sixth
graders at M.M.S. will be able to answer all of the questions on
our questionnaire about drugs correctly.
II. METHODOLOGY:
First, we wrote a statement of purpose, reviewed the literature,
and developed our hypothesis. Then we developed a questionnaire
to send to 18 randomly selected students in the sixth grade at
M.M.S. When we got them back we tallied the responses and
analyzed our data. Finally, we rejected or accepted our
hypothesis, wrote our summary and conclusion, and applied what we
found to the real world.
III. ANALYSIS OF DATA:
We received a total of fifteen questionnaires back. A majority of
fourteen students said they knew what drug abuse was. A majority
of fourteen students correctly knew nicotine and alcohol are the
most popular legal drugs. A majority of fourteen students
correctly knew that cocaine and marijuana are the most popular
illegal drugs. A majority of ten students knew that airplane glue
could be used as a drug. A majority of twelve students knew that
drugs do hurt your body and a majority of nine students knew that
if you try a drug just once it can harm you. A majority of six
students thought that marijuana was the worst drug. Only one
student correctly knew that nicotine and alcohol were the worst
drug, causing billions of dollars of loses to industry, chronic
diseases and death. A majority of eleven students thought that if
a parent uses drugs it makes the child want to.
IV. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION:
The students we sent our questionnaires to correctly answered a
majority of the questions, but did not answer all of the questions
correctly. Therefore, we will reject our hypothesis which stated
that a majority of sixth grade students at MMS would be able to
answer all of the questions on our questionnaire correctly. It
should be noted that the students' answers did show that they know
a great deal about drugs and drug abuse.
V. APPLICATION:
We can apply our findings by telling drug prevention committees
that they are doing a good job informing kids about drugs and drug
abuse.
TITLE: Student Attitudes About Smoking
STUDENT RESEARCHER: Jonathan Cain
SCHOOL: Mandeville Middle School
Mandeville, Louisiana
GRADE: 6
TEACHER: John I. Swang, Ph.D.
I. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS:
I would like to find out about student attitudes towards smoking
because the Louisiana State Legislature just passed a bill stating
that you have to allow people to smoke in public buildings. My
hypothesis states that one hundred percent of the students
surveyed will think that smoking should be banned from public
buildings.
II. METHODOLOGY:
First, I wrote my statement of purpose, hypothesis, review of
literature, and bibliography. Next, I wrote my methodology. Then
I developed my questionnaire and drew a random sample. Then I
distributed my questionnaires. When they were returned I scored
them. Next, I accepted/rejected my hypothesis. Then I wrote my
analysis of data, and summary and conclusion. I then put together
an abstract and applied my findings to the real world.
III. ANALYSIS OF DATA:
Of the eighteen questionnaires that I sent out, fourteen were
returned. All of the students surveyed know that smoking causes
cancer. Fifty-eight percent of the students surveyed have parents
who do not smoke. Eighty-six percent of the students surveyed
plan to never start to smoke. All of the students surveyed know
that second-hand smoke causes cancer. A majority of sixty-nine
percent of the student surveyed think that smoking should be
banned from public places. Fifty-five percent of the students
surveyed strongly disagree with the state bill just passed which
will allow people to smoke in public places.
IV. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION:
Sixty-nine percent of the students think that smoking should be
banned from public places. Therefore, I reject my hypothesis
which stated that one hundred percent of the students surveyed
will think that smoking should be banned from public buildings.
V. APPLICATION:
I will apply my findings to the real world by telling the
Louisiana State Legislature that smoking is very harmful to your
health and that they should reconsider the bill which allows
people to smoke in public places. The majority of students think
their bill is wrong.
TITLE: Student Opinions About Bill Clinton
STUDENT RESEARCHER: Chris Carson
SCHOOL: Mandeville Middle School
Mandeville, Louisiana
GRADE: 6
TEACHER: John I. Swang, Ph.D.
I. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS:
I want to find out how much students agree or disagree with
president Clinton's decisions about various issues. My hypothesis
states that the M.M.S. students will agree with all of President
Clinton's decisions about current issues.
II. METHODOLOGY:
First, I stated my purpose, reviewed my literature, and developed
my hypothesis. Then I wrote the methodology and designed my
questionnaire. I sent it to eighteen randomly chosen sixth grade
students. After receiving my questionnaires, I tallied up the
results. Next, I rejected or accepted my hypothesis, wrote my
summary and conclusion, and applied what I found out to the real
world.
III. ANALYSIS OF DATA:
Of the eighteen questionnaires I handed out, I received fifteen
back. Seventy-seven percent of the students disagreed with
President Clinton's decision on lifting the ban on homosexuals in
the military. Fifty-three percent of the students disagreed with
President Clinton's decision to raise taxes on rich people. All
agreed with President Clinton's decision to stop cutting trees in
the National Forest. Sixty-four percent of the students disagreed
with President Clinton's decision to help out the former Soviet
Union. Sixty percent of the students disagreed with sending U.S.
troops into Bosnia. Eighty-six percent of the students said that
the deficit was not very important to them. Eighty percent of the
students said that Bill Clinton is not going to put our country on
the right track when his four year term is over. Sixty-nine
percent of the students thought that the deficit is going to
increase when Bill Clinton's four year term is over. Seventy-
three percent of the students said that if they could vote again
they would vote for Bush. Overall, the students thought that Bill
Clinton was doing a poor job being President.
IV. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION:
The student disagreed with all of Clinton's decisions about issues
except for the cutting of trees in national forests. Therefore, I
reject my hypothesis which states that the M.M.S. students will
agree with all of President Clinton's decision about current
issues. Overall the students don't like the job Clinton is doing
in office.
V. APPLICATION:
I can apply this information by sending my electronic abstract on
American Online to President Clinton and let him know what the
students think of his work (Screen Address: PZ Clinton).
TITLE: Student Ranking of the President's First One-Hundred Days
STUDENT RESEARCHER: Katie Clay-Wakefield
SCHOOL: Mandeville Middle School

I. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS:
I would like to find out how students feel about President Clinton
and his stand on the issues. My hypothesis states that the
majority of students will think that President Clinton is doing a
good job as President.
II. METHODOLOGY:
First, I wrote my statement of purpose, reviewed my literature,
and developed my hypothesis. Second, I wrote my methodology and
developed my questionnaire. Third, I drew a random sample
population of 18 students and administered my questionnaires. I
then scored my questionnaires, wrote my analysis of data, and
summary and conclusion. Finally, I wrote my abstract and applied
my findings to the real world.
III. ANALYSIS OF DATA:
Thirteen of the 18 surveys were returned. One-third of the
students ranked Clinton overall performance as a 1 (1 being
lowest, 10 being highest), 13% ranked him 2, 6% ranked him 3, 6%
ranked him 4, 13% ranked him 5, 6% ranked him 6, 6% ranked him 8,
and no one ranked him 7, 9, or 10. The majority of the 15
students thought that he was doing a bad job. One-third of the
students thought that he should address the economy first, 20%
said the environment, 40% said health care, and no one said
foreign affairs. A majority of the students said we should stop
clear cutting national forests. A majority of the students said
that homosexuals shouldn't be allowed in the military and that
abortion shouldn't be allowed. Seventy-three percent of the
students said Clinton should give more money to education. More
students thought that we should send troops to Bosnia. Every
student said that Clinton shouldn't raise taxes on their families.
A majority of the students said that taxes should pay for
reforming and expanding the health care system. Seventy-three
percent of the students surveyed thought that Clinton should not
raise taxes on people who earn $200,000 or more a year. And a
majority of the students thought that Clinton was taking on too
many issues as a President.
IV. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION:
Overall, most of the students did not like what President Clinton
has been doing his first hundred days in office. Therefore, I
reject my hypothesis which stated that a majority of the students
surveyed will think that President Clinton is doing a good job as
President.
V. APPLICATION:
I can apply my findings to the real world by sending an electronic
note about my research to President Clinton on America OnLine

I. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS:
I would like to know what sixth grade students at M.M.S. think
about alcohol abuse. My first hypothesis states that the majority
of students I survey will be against alcohol abuse. My second
hypothesis states that the majority of students I survey will have
parents who drink.
II. METHODOLOGY:
First, I wrote my statement of purpose, review of literature, and
hypothesis. Then I developed and administered my questionnaires to
18 students randomly chosen from the sixth grade. Next, I scored
my questionnaires and wrote my analysis of data. Finally, I wrote
my summary and conclusion, and application.
III. ANALYSIS OF DATA:
Of the eighteen questionnaires I sent out, ten were returned. A
majority of nine students had parents who did not drink. A
majority of six students had never tried alcohol. A majority of
six students know someone who abuses alcohol. All of the students
said that they hated drunk driving and knew what alcohol abuse is.
A majority of eight students knew someone who died of alcohol
abuse. Finally, all of the students said they are not pressured
to drink.
IV. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION:
The majority of the students I surveyed were against alcohol
abuse. Therefore, I accepted my first hypothesis which stated that
the students I survey will be against alcohol abuse. The majority
of the students I surveyed also had parents who didn't drink.
Therefore, I rejected my second hypothesis that stated the
students I survey will have parents who drink.
V. APPLICATION:
I can apply my data to the real world by using it to further the
research on how students feel about alcohol abuse.

I am doing this research project because I get sick when somebody
around me smokes in public buildings. My hypothesis states that
seventy-five percent of the students at Mandeville Middle School
will want to ban smoking from public buildings.
II. METHODOLOGY:
First, I wrote my purpose, hypothesis, and review of literature.
Next, I developed my questionnaire and completed a random sample.
Then I conducted an analysis of data, wrote a summary and
conclusion, and application. Finally, I wrote my abstract.
III. ANALYSIS OF DATA:
Of the 18 questionnaires distributed, I received 16 back. The
majority of students were against smoking in public buildings.
The majority was also against smoking in public. The majority did
mind sitting next to a smoker. The majority did not think smoking
should be allowed in restaurants. The majority had non-smoking
parents. The majority did not smoke and did not think it was cool
to smoke. The majority also thought kids smoke to fit in. All the
students said that they will not smoke when they get older.
IV. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION:
The majority of the students I surveyed thought that smoking
should not be allowed in public buildings. In conclusion, I found
out that 81% of the students agreed with me that smoking should
not be allowed in public buildings. My hypothesis stated that 75%
or more of the students would be against smoking in public
building. I accepted my hypothesis.
V. APPLICATION:
I will send my findings to the Governor and ask him to enact
strict laws which ban smoking in public buildings.
