TITLE: How Students Feel About the Special Olympics

STUDENT RESEARCHER: Paul Laperouse
SCHOOL: Mandeville Middle School
         Mandeville, Louisiana
GRADE: 6
TEACHER: Gina Stone M.ED.

I. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS:

I wanted to know how six graders at MMS feel about the Special
Olympics. I think a majority of the students at MMS will be
sympathetic toward the Special Olympics.

II. METHODOLOGY:

First, I wrote my statement of purpose, reviewed the literature,
and developed a hypothesis. Next, I made a questionnaire and
passed it out to 18 randomly chosen students at MMS. When the
questionnaires were returned I analyzed the data. Finally, I
accepted or rejected my hypothesis, and wrote my summary and
conclusion.

III. ANALYSIS OF DATA:

The majority of students did not know someone who participated in
the Special Olympics. Ninty-two percent of the students agreed
that our school should have Special Olympic teams as well as
regular teams. Ninty-two percent of the students would be willing
to help at the Special Olympics if a player asked them to. All of
the students said that they would stand by a Special Olympic
participants even when their friends were around.

IV. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION:

I accepted my hypothesis which stated that the majority of
students at MMS would be sympathetic to the Special Olympics.
Students felt that we should have Special Olympic teams here at
Mandeville Middle School. The majority of students said that they
would help at the Special Olympics if a player asked them to.

V. APPLICATION:

According to my surveys students have a great interest in Special
Olympics. Therefore, I think schools should consider starting
Special Olympics sports programs.

TITLE: Student Knowledge of The Vietnam Veterans Memorial

STUDENT RESEARCHER: Amanda Katzenstein
SCHOOL: Mandeville Middle School
         Mandeville, Louisiana
GRADE: 6
TEACHER: Gina Stone, M.Ed.

I. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS:

I wanted to find out about the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and how
much the students of M.M.S. knew about the topic. My hypothesis
stated that the majority of the students would answer 60% of the
responses to my questionnaire about the Memorial would be correct.

II. METHODOLOGY:

First, I did my review of literature. Then I formed my
hypothesis, statement of purpose, and developed my questionnaire.
Next, I gave it to 18 randomly selected students, tallied my
results, and analyzed my data. Finally, I accepted or rejected my
hypothesis and wrote a summary and conclusion.

III. ANALYSIS OF DATA:

Out of the 18 questionnaires that I administered, I had 16
questionnaires returned. Thirteen percent of the students knew
that there were 58,156 names on the memorial. Forty-four percent
knew that the average age of men who died was 19. Thirty-one
percent knew the memorial was 250 feet high in each direction.
Nineteen percent knew that 140 billion dollars was spent on the
war. Nineteen percent knew that the project was built in 3 and
1/2 years. Half of the people knew that Maya Ling designed the
memorial. Sixty-nine percent knew the memorial was in the U.S.A.
Eight-one percent knew that the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was
dedicated to the Veterans.

IV. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION

I rejected my hypothesis which stated that 60% of the responses to
my questionnaire about the Memorial would be correct. Only 41% of
the responses were correct.

V. APPLICATION

Since less than half of the students knew about the memorial or
the war, perhaps schools should consider spending more time on
teaching American history during the Vietnam era.

TITLE: How Much Do Students Know About the Holocaust?

STUDENT RESEARCHER: Allison Graziano
SCHOOL: Mandeville Middle School
         Mandeville, Louisiana
GRADE: 6
TEACHER: John I. Swang, Ph.

I. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS:

I want to know how much students know about the Holocaust. I think
students should know about this issue because it was a big issue
50 years ago and still is. My hypothesis states that 50% of 6th
grade students at MMS will correctly answer a majority of the
questions on my questionnaire about the Holocaust.

II. METHODOLOGY:

First, I wrote my statement of purpose. Next, I read the
literature and wrote a paragraph on what I learned. Then I
developed a hypothesis to be tested. I then drew a random sample
population of 18 students in the 6th grade at MMS. Following that,
I administered my questionnaire. When they were returned I scored
them. Then I completed an analysis of data and developed a chart
to represent my findings. Finally, I wrote my summary, conclusion,
and application.

III. ANALYSIS OF DATA:

Of the 18 questionnaires sent out, 16 were returned. Fifty
percent of the students knew that the Holocaust was a time when
Hitler took over Germany and killed many Jews. Forty-four percent
didn't know what the Holocaust was and 17% said it was a time in
Europe when police were prejudice against Jews. Seventy-five
percent of the students knew that the Holocaust happened in the
1940's. Only one person did not know that the Jews were the
people persecuted the most. Twenty-five percent of the students
knew that 6 million Jews were killed during the Holocaust. The
majority knew that one million children were killed during the
Holocaust. Sixty-three percent of the students knew that Rauol
Wallendurg saved a million Jews from persecution. A majority of
the students thought that life in the Ghettos was bad and
everybody thought that the Holocaust really happened.

IV. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION:

>From the information on my questionnaires, I think that a lot of
students know something about the Holocaust. Twelve out of the 16
students answered over half the questions right. Therefore, I
accept my hypothesis which states that 50% of the students at MMS
will correctly answer a majority of the questions on my
questionnaire

V. APPLICATION:

I can use this information as I try to understand how people
survive in dangerous situations.

TITLE: What Are Students Favorite Toys?

STUDENT RESEARCHER: Craig White
SCHOOL: Mandeville Middle School
         Mandeville, Louisiana
GRADE: 6
TEACHER: John I. Swang Ph.D.

I. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS

I wanted to find out what 6th graders think are the most popular
toys. My hypothesis states that video games will be the most
popular toys.

II. METHODOLOGY

First, I wrote my statement of purpose and review of literature.
Then I wrote my hypothesis and methodology. Then I handed out a
questionnaire to one randomly picked student from each 6th grade
class. After they were all returned, I tallied up the responses
and analyzed my data. Then I wrote my summary and conclusions,
accepted or rejected my hypothesis, and applied what I learned to
the real world. Finally, I typed up my abstract.

III. ANALYSIS OF DATA

Sixteen out of the eighteen students responded to my
questionnaire. The majority of students said that video games
were their favorite toys. The majority of students also said that
video games are their favorite toys whether they have it or not.
The students preferred both inside and outside toys. The majority
of students said advertisements are what influences them to buy
toys. The majority of students said that video games were their
friends favorite toys. The majority of students also said that
video games are the most popular toys at M.M.S. The majority of
students said that advertisements are how toys get so popular.
Finally, the majority of students disagreed that 6th graders are
too old to play with toys.

IV. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS

The majority of students said that video games were their favorite
toys. Therefore, I accepted my hypothesis which stated that video
games would be the most popular toy among 6th graders at M.M.S.

V. APPLICATION

I could use the information I found by telling toy stores what the
most popular toys among 6th graders are. That should help
business.

TITLE: The Most Popular Shoes Among Students

STUDENT RESEARCHER: Joey Griggs
SCHOOL: Mandeville Middle School
         Mandeville, Louisiana
GRADE: 6
TEACHER: John I. Swang, Ph.D.

I. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS:

I wanted to find out which brand of shoes is the most popular for
boys at M.M.S. I also wanted to know their reasons for buying a
certain brand of shoes. My hypothesis stated that the most
popular shoes for boys at M.M.S. will be the "Nike Air Jordans."

II. METHODOLOGY:

First, I wrote up a statement of purpose, review of literature,
and hypothesis. Then I wrote up a questionnaire and administered
them to 15 randomly selected students in the sixth grade at M.M.S.
I then scored the completed questionnaires, recorded my data, and
completed my analysis of data. I then accepted or rejected my
hypothesis and wrote a summary and conclusion. Lastly, I wrote up
my application.

III. ANALYSIS OF DATA:

I found out that the majority of students picked "Nike Air" and
"Nike Air Jordans" for their most favorite pair of shoes when
given a choice between Addidas, Reebok, and K-Swiss. The majority
of students picked their favorite pair of shoes because the shoes
were comfortable. The majority of students disliked K-Swiss
because they were not comfortable. The majority of students
picked Nike to be the most popular pair of shoes because they are
worn the most by other students.

IV. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION:

Nike and "Nike Air Jordans" were the most favorite and popular
shoes in M.M.S. Therefore, I accepted my hypothesis which stated
that "Nike Air Jordans" would be the most popular shoes.

V. APPLICATION:

My results showed that "Nike Air" and "Nike Air Jordans" are most
popular shoes. I will go to the nearest store that sells shoes
and tell them that they were the most popular shoes at my school.
Hopefully, this will help the store's business.
