TITLE: Which Author Wrote Which Book?

STUDENT RESEARCHER: Jonathan Cain
SCHOOL: Mandeville Middle School
         Mandeville, Louisiana
GRADE: 6
TEACHER: John I. Swang, Ph.D.

I. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS:

I want to find out if sixth grade boys and girls are knowledgeable
about which author wrote which book. My hypothesis states that
the book and author that most people will get correct will be C.S.
Louis and THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE.

II. METHODOLOGY:

First, I wrote the statement of purpose, the review of literature,
the bibliography, and the hypothesis. Then I developed my
methodology and questionnaire. Next, I drew a random sample
population and administered the questionnaire to 18 sixth grade
girls and boys. I then scored the questionnaires. Finally, I
wrote the analysis of data, wrote the summary and conclusion, the
complete report, and the abstract. I then applied my findings to
the real world.

III. ANALYSIS OF DATA:

Fifteen questionnaires were returned to me. Eighty percent of the
students surveyed knew that Jim Davis wrote GARFIELD KEEPS HIS
CHIN UP, seventy-three percent knew that Judy Bloom wrote SUPER
FUDGE, sixty percent knew that Jerry Spinneli wrote MANIAC MAGEE,
forty-seven percent knew that C.S. Louis wrote THE LION, THE
WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE, forty-seven percent knew that J.R.R.
Tolken wrote THE HOBBIT, forty-seven percent knew that Nataile
Babbit wrote TUCK EVERLASTING, thirty-three percent knew that
Barte De Clements wrote SIXTH GRADE CAN REALLY KILL YOU, twenty-
seven percent knew that E.L. Konigsburg wrote FROM THE MIXED-UP
FILES OF MRS. BASIL E. FRANKWEILER, twenty percent knew that Gary
Larson wrote THE FARSIDE, and thirteen percent knew that Marion
Dane Bauer wrote ON MY HONOR. The total percentage of all correct
answers from the returned questionnaires was forty-five percent.

IV. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION:

Eighty percent of the students who responded to the
questionnaires knew that Jim Davis wrote GARFIELD KEEPS HIS CHIN
UP, and forty-seven percent knew that C.S. Louis wrote THE LION,
THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE. Therefore, I rejected my hypothesis
which stated that the most students would know that C.S. Louis
wrote THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE.

V. APPLICATION:

I can apply this information to the real world by telling teachers
that their students need to pay more attention to who wrote the
book they are reading.

TITLE: Favorite Magazines of Boys and Girls

STUDENT RESEARCHER: Jacqueline Warden
SCHOOL: Mandeville Middle School
         Mandeville, Louisiana
GRADE: 6
TEACHER: John I. Swang, Ph.D.

I. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS:

I want to know what kind of magazines sixth grade students at
Mandeville Middle School read. My first hypothesis states that
the girl's favorite magazine will be "Teen Magazine." My second
hypothesis states that the boy's favorite magazine will be "Sports
Illustrated."

II. METHODOLOGY:

First, I wrote my statement of purpose and review of literature.
Next, I wrote my hypothesis and developed questionnaire. Then I
administered and scored my questionnaires. After that I wrote my
analysis of data, summary and conclusion, and application.

III. ANALYSIS OF DATA:

A total of fourteen students returned their questionnaires. Of
the seven boys who returned their questionnaires, six read often,
five read magazines, five subscribed to magazines, and four
students subscribed to a family magazine. The boys' favorite
magazine was "Sports Illustrated." Out of the seven girls who
returned their questionnaires, six read often, all read magazines,
four subscribed to magazines, and seven students subscribed to a
family magazine. The girls' favorite magazine was "Teen
Magazine."

IV. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION:

I accepted my first hypothesis which stated the boys' favorite
magazine would be "Sports Illustrated." I also accepted my second
hypothesis which stated the girls' favorite magazine would be
"Teen Magazine." The majority of students subscribed to magazines
and read them often.

V. APPLICATION:

I can use the information I collected to tell the principal that
the majority of students read magazines often, so we should sell
magazines for a fund raiser at school.

TITLE: Sixth Grade Reading Habits

STUDENT RESEARCHER: Eric Blundell
SCHOOL: Mandeville Middle School
         Mandeville, Louisiana
GRADE: 6
TEACHER: John I. Swang, Ph.D.

I. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS:

I am doing this research because I want to know how much an
average sixth grader reads. How long? When? Where? My
hypothesis states that an average sixth grader will read one book
every month.

II. METHODOLOGY:

First, I wrote my statement of purpose. Then I wrote my review of
literature. Next, I developed my hypothesis. Then I developed my
questionnaire. Next, I did a random sample, distributed my
questionnaires, and then I scored them. Then I recorded my data
on my data collection sheet. Next, I wrote my analysis of data
and my summary and conclusion. Then I wrote my application.
Finally, I wrote my abstract.

III. ANALYSIS OF DATA:

Of the 18 questionnaires I distributed, I received 15 back. The
majority of the students read two books or more a month. The
majority of the students read for thirty minutes each day. The
majority of the students read from
6 pm to 12 am each day. The majority of the students liked
mystery books the best. The majority of the students read at
home. The majority of the students liked to read.

IV. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION:

In conclusion, I found out that most sixth grade students read two
or more books a month. My hypothesis stated that an average sixth
grade student would read one book a month. Therefore I rejected
my hypothesis.

V. APPLICATION:

I can apply this research to the real world by trying to read the
same ways as the students I surveyed and see if it helps me read
better.

TITLE: Which Types Of Books Are The Most Favorite of Students?

STUDENT RESEARCHER: Chris Carson
SCHOOL: Mandeville Middle School
         Mandeville, Louisiana
GRADE: 6
TEACHER: John I. Swang, Ph.D.

I. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS:

I want to find out which type of books are the most favorite of
sixth grade students at M.M.S. My hypothesis states that
adventure books will be the most liked type of books.

II. METHODOLOGY:

First, I developed my statement of purpose and hypothesis. Then I
made my questionnaire and handed it out to a randomly chosen group
of students composed of nine boys and nine girls. I tallied up
the responses on the questionnaire and wrote it down on my data
collection sheet. Next, I did my analysis of data and summary of
conclusion. Finally, I applied what I found out to the real
world.

III. ANALYSIS OF DATA:

Of the eighteen questionnaires I handed out, I received thirteen
back. Eight boys and five girls responded. Seventy-five percent
of the boys chose mystery as their favorite type of book and
fifty-five percent chose adventure. Eighty percent of the girls
chose humor as their favorite type of book. Sixty percent chose
adventure and mystery. The overall favorite type of book of boys
and girls was mystery with sixty-nine percent. Adventure came
next with sixty-one percent.

IV. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION:

I found out that boys and girls like to read mystery books the
most. Therefore, I reject my hypothesis which states that boys
and girls will like to read adventure books the most.

V. APPLICATION:

I now know that if I decided to get my sister a book for her
birthday, I should get her a humor book.
