Dear Walter,
I wish to thank you for your contribution to the war memories by talking
about the poetry and songs that rang during the war. I remember the
German soldiers singing in the streets and although we didn't understand
the words and even made our own "persiflage" of them, we were impressed
by their rythm and the beautiful sounds. Reading the texts and knowing
the subtexts I still do not manage to stay indifferent when I read them.
How can we explain the fascination. I was also very enlightened by the
explanation about the influence of catholic liturgy and rites int he
Nazi celebration. These celebrations were also powerful, even if we know
the hidden agendas.
Kees Vanderheyden.
