Everone,
I wish to thank you for all of your suggestions and comments.
Some of the ideas I have put into actions because I had already planned
to. I am exptremely greatful for the statistics. I have them
somewhere, but now all I have to do is print up the post and copy it for
each member of the class.
One thing that really shocked me was the idea that this
student's comment could be anti-semitic. If he would have said it with
a derogatory inflection in his voice, I might have thought that way, but
until it was mentioned, I had no idea this could be his deep seated
attitude. I was more inclined to see his comment as lack of knowledge
and/or a desire to see my reaction. I basically ignored the comment and
merely said, as a general statement, "some of us have a lot to learn."
I think I will take the suggestion of Salvadore:
> i suggest an in-class debate: you and he, arguing for
> "only to free the Jews", and 2-3 of your best students
> arguing for the consensus historical view. then this
> one student will have to dig up his sources, you will

> will learn how historical research is conducted and evaluated.
and try to develop it. That is if end of the school year activities
don't get in the way. And already one of the Grandpas has volunteered
to come in. But you know, the grandpas are getting older and older.
Pretty soon there won't be any grandpas to tell the story.
Again, thanks so much for your suggestions and information. It
is greatly appreciated.
