Dear Pat,
Just to give a first hint about the people crushed by WW2, your students
can have a look at these conservative figures of the people who died
between 1939 and 1945 : Russia 21 million dead (10 million civilians),
China 7.30 million dead (6 million civilians), Poland 5.7 million dead
(5.6 million civilians!), Germany 4.2 million dead (780 000 civilians),
Japan 2 million dead (672 000 civilians). France 600 000 dead (400 000
civilians!), and we can go on. The total conservative count is : 45
million dead. You'll find some of these figures in the Grolier
Encyclopedia. They do not reflect the millions of wounded, the cities
destroyed, the hunger and misery. So the war was about many people from
many countries and the Americans, Russian, British, Canadian and so many
other who gave their lives fought for the freedom of a very great part
of the world.
