Dear Sarah,
at the beginning of WW II I was a 6 yr. old boy living in Warsaw. Both my
parents were doctors. My father was conscripted ino the Polish army, whilst
I stayed behind with my mother and grandmother. Mother was working and
sleeping in the hospital, whilst I stayed with grandma in our flat in
central Warsaw.
There are not many things one remembers, but certain cameo pictures remain
forever in one's mind. I must have given poor old gran a hall of a time as
at 6 yrs. old one does not have any idea of danger and I spent all my time
hanging over the balcony from our third floor flat watching. After just a
few days of the war, German planes overflew Warsaw at will and just above
rooftops, shooting at anything that moved, especially defenceless civilians.
One such scene remains with me forever. Only some 100 yrds. away from us was
a pharmacy and a man was crossing the road to get to it as he heard the
"brave" German pilot approach all guns blazing. The man tried to get away by
running across the street, but the stream of bullets from the machine gun
caught him, cleanly cutting off his head. The amazing thing was that the man
continued to run, headless with blood spurting out of his neck, untill he
tripped over the curb and fell down.
War is horrible, especially when waged on the defenceless
