>At the time the World War II started I was a 5 yr. old. There is a lot I do
not remember, but there are a couple of Cameos from the time Germans
attacked Warsaw, a civilian City in Sept. 1939. By the way, Warsaw defended
herself for longer than the whole of France during that conflict.
We lived in a large flat in the centre of Warsaw, standing on the balcony I
remember looking one way at a leafy green square. Looking the other way one
could see ul. Marszalkowska, one of the main thoroughfares of Warsaw. On a
corner there was a large pharmacy. The German planes were flying low
strafing ie. machinegunning anyone in the street. i saw a man run across the
road trying to get to the pharmacy, the strem of bulletts cut his head clean
off, blood spurted from his neck---yet he continued running untill he
tripped up on the curb. That picture will stay with me to the end of my
life, as will another more cheerfull one.
My mother, a doctor, decided to move me to the hospital where she was
working, looking after the wounded, to stop me from spending so much time on
the balcony-a dangerous place. As there was no transport running we had to
walk about a mile to the hospital. There was ofcourse an air raid during the
walk, life was a continuous air raid then. A bomb hit a glass works and set
it alight. The beautifull colours from that fire, greens, reds, yellows and
blues of the burning glass will again stay with me for ever.

Yours sincerely
