To Horace Basham
1 What did you do in the Air Training Corp?
I attended classes in Maths. Mechanical engineering, Learnt to service
Aircraft engines. Joined the band as a trumpeter. (played a B# French
cavaly trumpet) marched and drilled. Had a good time at local dances.
2 What id you have to do at night time as a fire watcher?
As far as I can remember sit in the watch room waiting for fire bombs to
fall in the factory premises. drink tea. chat and sleep on camp beds fully
clothed. fortunately the prmises were never hit while I was there. Being
a paint and varnish factory. Not a Good scenario.
3 What would you do if you saw any fires?
A: Try to put them out, B: Call the fire brigade, C: Get out as quick as
possible.
4 Where were you based as a fire watcher?
Firstly, as I have said at the paint and varnish factory. Then secondly in
the Victoria and Albert docks London.
5 Do you still know any of the people you fire watched with?
No sadly they would all be dead long before now. I was only 16/17 years old
then. the others were a lot older. The men were too old for military
service. I joined the RAF just before my 19th birthday. The day before to be
precise.
