It was both frightening and exciting. For the first day or two we could
watch the dog fights, after that the polish air force was wiped out, the
German planes came in as they wanted, very often low down to strafe-kill by
machine gun fire women and children in the street. At 6 yrs old one has no
fear or understanding, to day I think I would have been very frightened indeed.

I would not know, I am Polish.

There was no blitz as such in Warsaw, the city was bombed first in 1939, we
spent some of the night time raids in cellars but most of the time one just
got on with life as the bombardment and shelling was pretty well continuous.
The second such experience came in 1944 during the Warsaw uprising against
the German occupying forces. Some 90% of the buildings were destroyed and
about 200 000 people were killed. I was just outside Warsaw at that time so
can not describe it from personal experience.

I was not evacuated

Yes1111 It was a question of having enough to eat, at least I learned to
like everything, hunger is the best cook. Was it not that my family were
well off and could get food on the black market, I doubt if I would have
survived.

Sweets at that time were just a distant memory.

Did not have one.

We were overjoyed at that time, disappointment came shortly afterwards, when
for the time being at least, words remained just words and poland fought on
her own.

At home I think, playing and wandered what the fuss was about.

Did not have one

Unpleasant, but the curfew when a Pole was liable to be shot dead for just
being in the street, was far worse.

No, no, no. Most of my family were executed by the Germans, my mother sent
to concentration camp, hardly a game.

See above.
