Dear Tom,
Just returned from a trip to Australia where I found a book for youth that I
think folks would like to know about. WHAT WAS THE WAR LIKE, GRANDMA? Emmy
remembers World War II written and illustrated by Rachel Tonkin (1996).
Although the book is written from the view of a single child, the author
credits 16 people as the source of the experiences described in the book. We
often forget that WW II involved the entire world and that there are both
shared and unique experiences. The address of the publisher is:
Reed for Kids (a division of Reed International Books Australia Pty Ltd.)
 17-23 Redwood Drive
Dinley, Victoria 3172
It strikes me that books like this one could be written by others and
that this would be a good contribution to leave to our youth.
I came on the book in the book store at the War Memorial in Canberra and I
highly recommend a visit to the memorial to anyone who visits Australia. The
staff and volunteers were very helpful and knowledgeable. It is their
purpose to tell about war in a realistic way and the display artifacts,
diaromas, and much art work that does just that and leaves the conclusions
about war to the observer. Mary E. Haas
