I am a teacher of 6th grade in rural Maine. My class has just finished a
study of World War II and the Holocaust. It has been troubling for them to be
faced with the realities of war in even this protected setting.
I will share this story with them. It is powerful and beautifully written.
My father also fought in World War II, but did come home and still lives with
the memories of his war experience. He was and is a gentle, religious man,
and yet he was put in the position of having to fire at, kill, other human
beings.
What is it that we must do to alter any decision that leads to the
destruction of men, people?
Thank you.
